Dead battery? We’ve all been there. You turn the key… and nothing. Maybe a sad click, maybe silence. Either way, you’re not going anywhere.

Good news, you can charge your battery, and no, you don’t need to be a mechanic to do it.

Step 1: Find Your Connection Points

Pop the hood and look for the positive (+) and negative (–) terminals.

Here’s something most people don’t know: not all batteries are actually under the hood. Some are in the trunk or under seats. But manufacturers still provide jump/charging posts under the hood, and it is completely fine (and recommended) to use those.

Step 2: Grab a Battery Charger

You’ll need an actual battery charger, not jumper cables. Plug it in, but don’t turn it on yet.

Step 3: Hook It Up (The Right Way)

Red clamp to positive (+)
Black clamp to negative (–)

Double-check before turning it on. This is not the time to guess.

Step 4: Let It Charge

Turn the charger on and let it do its thing. Depending on how low the battery is, this could take a bit. Good time to grab a coffee and wait it out.

Step 5: Start the Car

Try starting the car once it’s charged. If it starts, let it run so the alternator can keep charging it.
If it doesn’t… the battery may be done.

Here’s the simple, funny-but-true guide to jumpstarting your car—so you look like a pro, not a dummy.

Step 1: Find a Willing Helper

First, you’ll need another car with a good battery. Translation: time to wave down your neighbor or bribe your buddy with coffee.

Step 2: Know Your Cables (a.k.a. Don’t Be Scared of the Clamps)

Grab those jumper cables from your trunk (you do have them in your trunk, right?). They’re the ones that look like giant red and black chip clips.

Red = Positive (+)
