Cold weather doesn’t magically ruin a healthy battery overnight. Instead, that first big temperature drop can expose a battery that was already getting weak, especially after spending all summer dealing with extreme heat.
As temperatures fall, your battery has less power available while your engine needs more energy to start. A battery that was barely hanging on during warmer weather may suddenly decide that 30 degrees is where it draws the line.
