The Truth About Warming Up Your Car in Cold Weather

Alternative Automotive • January 2, 2025

On a frosty winter morning, it’s tempting to let your car idle and warm up before hitting the road.

But is it really necessary? Let’s separate fact from fiction.

The Myth of Warming Up Your Car

Many people believe that warming up your car is essential to prevent engine damage. This was true for older vehicles with carbureted engines, which needed idling to make them drivable without stalling. However, modern engines are designed to operate efficiently without extended idling. They have advanced programming that allows them to warm up quickly and be ready to operate in just a couple of minutes.

Why Long Idling Isn’t Ideal

Letting your car idle for too long wastes fuel, increases emissions, and does little to benefit your engine. In fact, prolonged idling can lead to residue buildup in your engine, which may cause issues over time.

The Right Way to Warm Up Your Car

For modern vehicles, start the engine, let it run for a couple of minutes, or until your windows are clear and safe to see out of. Then, drive gently to allow the engine and other components to warm up naturally.
